President Obama’s Family Costs The US More Than 20 Times What The Royal Family Costs The UK
Another member of the royal family was born as the world watched in fascination. Many Americans have expressed confusion with the obsession with the royal family in the U.K. It seems, however, that the joke is on the U.S. President Obama and his family, just in 2011, cost the U.S. more than 20 times what the royal family cost the U.K. in 2011.
Obama’s family cost the U.S. $1.4 billion in 2011. Obama’s expenditures include the salaries of his staff, the Secret Service, the maintenance of Air Force One, and, of course, the family’s vacations. British taxpayers spent $57.8 million on the royal family in 2011. That’s more than 24 times what Obama and his family cost America in the same year.
In the book, “Presidential Perks Gone Royal”, author Robert Gray points out that Obama isn’t the first president to take advantage of the presidential perks at the expense of the taxpayers, although the amount of money spent on the first family during Obama’s reign is significantly higher than others.
